Architectural design pipelines are quickly becoming varied and complex. They span conceptual studies through to detail design, along complex trajectories. The workshop will focus on this fertile ground with exercises exploring connections between architecture, new media and fabrication. The aim will be to provide the programming and conceptual framework for more advanced digital methods within collaborative architectural design. The workshop will specifically focus on scripting within the process of interoperability through various stages of architectural design from concept sketches to downstream production. The intention will be to initiate participants into a compressed version of design-production pipelines in contemporary architectural practices. The brief will centre around the design of a small scale shelter and the emphasis in the teaching will be placed on emergent computational design-production tools.
The workshop will introduce the use of physically-based parameters as effective constraints in design development.
The intention is to test the hypothesis that creative expression can emerge through an iterative and negotiated dialogue between design intent and physically-based constraints.
Specifically the workshop intends to investigate the use of simplified and real-time physics and acoustic solvers to develop design options for spatio-structural frames that can then be iteratively refined against relevant evaluative – spatial and performance – criteria.
